Documents to provide

What documents to provide?

In all matters, we will require a certified copy of the death certificate issued by Births Deaths and Marriages.

Further documentation is required; however they vary depending on the account types held by the deceased (e.g. mortgage, savings account, business account).

Please call us on 1800 550 003 between 8am - 8pm (AEST/AEDT), Monday - Friday for information regarding your individual circumstances.

Useful Information

What happens after you notify us?

Each Estate's circumstances are assessed by us, and in some cases, we may require a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration in order to release the funds.

If we require a Grant of Probate/Letters of Administration, we will advise you in the first letter we send after receiving the death certificate.

Within 14 business days of receiving the necessary information, we will act on instructions regarding a deceased person's account from a person named in a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.

We will*:

  • a) Provide access to the deceased's account information.
  • b) Accept payments towards any debts owed to us by the deceased.

*This applies if we receive a request from someone authorised by the will, or someone who has applied for Letters of Administration and a Grant of Probate along with a certified copy of the death certificate.

What happens if there is no will?

If there was no will located at the time of passing, Letters of Administration may be required to ensure that the changes to the bank accounts are processed appropriately.

Letters of Administration may be granted by the Supreme Court giving authority to an administrator to finalise the estate.

Each State or Territory may have a different process for obtaining Letters of Administration.

I have a funeral invoice. Can this be paid from the accounts at ING?

Yes, we will pay the funeral home for you when provided with an invoice and letter of direction.

The letter must include your instructions to us, as well as your full name and address (for each joint account holder if applicable), account number or Client number, security property address (if applicable), and it must be signed by all account holders (as applicable).

I am the executor/ beneficiary, can the Estate funds be paid into my name?

Due to potential tax implications, you will need to open an ‘Estate of the Late’ bank account, which works as a transaction account allowing the executor/s to access money more easily from the Estate, and to deposit any cheques made out to the Estate.

We can only pay the funds via the following methods:

  • Cheque made payable to the " The Estate of the Late"

    OR

  • Electronic transfer to an account in the name of "The Estate of the Late" (a bank statement is required for this request).
