Investment Selection

The Trustees of an SMSF have discretion to decide what the fund invests in. Trustees need to ensure that all investments are consistent with the funds investment strategy and do not breach the SIS Act or other laws.

The following types of investments are generally acceptable:

  • Australian shares
  • global shares
  • direct property
  • other listed securities (eg: listed property trusts)
  • bank deposits
  • managed funds.

If you choose to allocate some of your SMSF to investments using ING’s OneAnswer Investment Portfolio or PortfolioOne Investment Service, you will receive a 25% discount on your DIY SuperService Administration Fee in proportion to the investments you hold.

OneAnswer Investment Portfolio offers a range of over 70 investment funds managed by ING Investment Management, OptiMix and other leading fund managers. Click here for more information on OneAnswer Investment Portfolio.

When you invest through PortfolioOne Investment Service, you can access an extensive menu of managed funds or invest directly in shares (ASX listed CHESS eligible securities).
Click here for more information on PortfolioOne Investment Service.

Before selecting your investments, you should consider the type of returns you are trying to achieve, the level of risk you can tolerate in order to achieve those returns, and how long you intend to hold your investment.

With help from your financial adviser, select investments that match your investment goals, and are in line with your risk and return profile.
